PRINT ON TENCEL, LYOCELL AND VISCOSE

Tencel printed for Bleu Tango

Digital printing on Tencel, lyocell and viscose is perfect for high quality fashion garments. These three artificial materials all originate from the same viscose manufacturing process, based on transformed wood fibre.  However, thanks to a cleaner transformation process of the fibre, Lyocell and Tencel have much greater ecological benefits. Maison Le Callennec’s range covers many weave types and weights to print on, for a host of creative possibilities. Enquire about our lyocell, Tencel and viscose fabrics to print.

Viscose is a type of rayon fibre that is made from natural sources such as wood and agricultural products that are regenerated as cellulose fibre. It is produced by dissolving wood pulp with a chemical process.

Although Tencel, Lyocell and viscose fabrics contain biodegradable fibres from natural origine, they are considered a synthetic material.

AN ECOLOGICAL ALTERNATIVE

The industrial production of viscose is well controlled today. However processes such as Lyocell, which is the generic name and Tencel, Lenzig AG’s commercial equivalent are a lot more virtuous. Here, the chemical process that dissolves wood pulp and re-constitutes it into a fibre that can be woven, uses non toxic solvants of which 97% are re-used in the fabrication cycle. The difference between Tencel and Lyocell doesn’t lie in their properties but in the wood they come from. Tencel comes from eucaliptus wood pulp and Lyocell comes from bambou. It is commonly said that these are the most environmentally friendly synthetic fibre widely available today.

Sustainable wood supply is also an important factor in the material’s impact on the environment. Viscose such as Eco-Vero Viscose with a PEFC-FSC certification contains fibres from traceable sustainable plantations.

BENEFITS OF LYOCELL AND TENCEL FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

  • The fibres are biodégradable
  • Tencel and eco-vero viscose are are made from PEFC-FSC certified sustainably managed sources.
  • The Lyocell and Tencel manufacturing process is a closed loop process where most of the water and solvants are re-used.
  • Manufacturing of Lyocell and Tencel requires 10 to 20 times less water than conventional coton.
  • The culture of wood for Lyocell and Tencel require less chemicals, fertilisers and pesticides  than the culture of conventional cotton.
  • Lyocell and Tencel fibres have excellent dyeability and require less dye than coton in the colouring process.

Producing Lyocell and Tencel fibres requires less water, chemicals and space than conventional coton.

A few qualities of lyocell, Tencel and viscose

WHAT ARE THEY MAINLY USED FOR ?

Created originally to imitate silk, viscose and then lyocell and Tencel make strong and comfortable fabrics available in a large range of qualities. Lyocell and Tencel are ideal for ample shirts, dresses and are widely used in women fashion. However we find that the demand for lyocell and Tencel is growing as much in kidswear and menswear as in womenswear.

Lyocell is particularly soft to the skin. The growth of bacteria on these fibres is much lower than in synthetic fibres and cotton due to the quick release of moisture.

The anti-perspirant, moisture absorbant properties of these fabrics make it ideal for summer collections, leisurewear and even sportswear.

Tencel and lyocell are extremely versatile, they’re also used in household products such as bedding and bathroom for example.
